SASSA Status Pending: What It Means

Still Pending, and nothing moves? It means SASSA has not finished checking your application. It is not a rejection, and it can still end as Approved or Declined. For an SRD month it often clears within days or weeks. For a permanent grant the official processing time is up to three months. Don't start a second application unless SASSA tells you to.

What Pending means for your grant

Which grant you applied for changes the answer.

SRD. Your application is between checks. When the Department of Social Development set out the 2022 rules, it said SASSA would test bank deposits against the income limit and run several database checks before deciding. The checks cover Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, your bank and SASSA's own grant records. A month stays Pending until every check comes back. You may see the word again next month, because each month is assessed on its own.

A permanent grant. SASSA has captured your application and not yet decided it. The government's service pages, such as the disability grant page, say processing may take up to three months.

The status guide shows how the same word differs between the two.

How long is too long?

For SRD, a Pending result often clears within days or weeks. SASSA's own booklet adds that a referred SRD application must complete a facial check, and so must an approved one that has not been paid. If you have sat at Pending for more than a couple of months, the cause may be something you can fix, such as a bank account or an ID mismatch. Check your details on the official portal. If nothing changes, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za.

On a permanent grant, once three months have passed it is up to you to chase it. Visit the office where you applied, call 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za, and quote your receipt.

What to do while you wait

Most of the time, nothing. Four things are still worth doing, and all four come from SASSA's own documents.

  • Keep the cellphone number active SASSA told applicants in November 2025 to use a number registered in their own name, and anyone changing it must complete a facial recognition check.
  • Check the bank account is yours SASSA said payment will not verify to an account that does not belong to the applicant.
  • Finish any verification request New applicants must complete a facial biometric check, and referred applicants must log in and request a link to do it. Without verification, SASSA said, the application is unsuccessful.
  • Keep your PIN to yourself SASSA says it never asks for it.

Then look again after a few days on the official portal. Not every hour.

How long does Pending usually last?

For a permanent grant, up to three months. For SRD it often clears within days or weeks. If it is still Pending after a couple of months, contact SASSA.
