What has been announced
The Department of Social Development's news site reported in October 2025 that SASSA had introduced self-service kiosks at local offices to reduce queues, provided free Wi-Fi, and put queue management systems in place. In September 2026 SASSA's chief executive described the next phase at a media engagement. The Witness reported that self-service kiosks are being introduced at offices nationwide, with more advanced kiosks planned for strategic locations by the 2027/28 financial year, and that free Wi-Fi is available at offices for people with limited data.
EWN reported in May 2026 that smart queue management was already in 416 offices, and no schedule for the rollout was given.
SASSA said the digital services complement face-to-face help. Queues are still part of a visit. At Pretoria Central, an electronic queue system now gives people a number on arrival and calls them to a counter in order, according to EWN in August 2026, which reported it as a response to people selling places in the queue.
What you can do at a kiosk
SASSA's announcements and SAnews point to these:
- Biometric verification SAnews reported in January 2026 that offices in Mpumalanga have biometric kiosks, official laptops and guest Wi-Fi for beneficiaries who lack data, smartphones or laptops to complete verification. The biometric verification guide explains why it is asked for.
- Online services SASSA says its online platform handles new applications, changes to payment details and e-Life Certification. With Wi-Fi at the office, you can use that platform on your own phone.
- Enquiries The WhatsApp channels announced at the same time are for SRD and grant enquiries. See the WhatsApp guide.
EWN described the system as biometric self-service kiosks, guest Wi-Fi, pre-screening and digital queue management.
Is your office covered yet?
To find out whether your office has a kiosk or Wi-Fi:
- Look up your office on the offices page, which lists the regional offices and how to find a local one.
- Call 0800 60 10 11 and ask whether your office has a kiosk and Wi-Fi.
- Bring your own phone or data in case the facilities aren't there yet.
What to bring
The kiosks don't replace paperwork for a permanent grant, which is still made in person with an officer. Bring the documents SASSA lists for your grant, your ID and your bank confirmation. For an SRD verification, bring your cellphone number and be ready for a facial check.
Never give your PIN to anyone who offers to operate a kiosk for you. SASSA says it never asks for it. Don't pay anyone for help at an office.
