Who decides SRD appeals
Not SASSA. The tribunal is a separate body. SASSA's SRD appeals page says the tribunal is mandated to consider appeals under section 18 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004, read with the COVID-19 SRD regulations. It reassesses SASSA's decision against the information it has, and tells you the outcome electronically.
Because it reassesses the decision against the information available to it, a decline for an income deposit or a failed identity check is best answered with evidence, not just an explanation.
How to submit an appeal
SASSA's booklet says you can ask a SASSA official for help lodging an appeal, or send it directly. For SRD, the appeal is lodged online. A SASSA statement carried by the Mpumalanga Department of Social Development on 11 November 2024 says to log in on the SRD website, select the appeal option and click DSD Appeals. The Department of Social Development's grant appeal page links to "COVID-19 SRD Appeals" at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals, and SASSA's booklet lists srd.dsd.gov.za for the same purpose. Use only the official addresses.
- Log in on srd.sassa.gov.za.
- Select the appeal option.
- Click DSD Appeals, then follow the form. Say which month or months you are appealing and why the decision is wrong.
- Attach the evidence the form asks for.
- Submit, and keep whatever reference or confirmation you are given.
If you can't get through, the Department of Social Development's Customer Care Centre is on 012 312 7727 or Customercare@dsd.gov.za, and a SASSA official can help you lodge it.
Evidence that helps. It depends on why you were declined. For an income decline, bank statements and a note explaining where a deposit came from. For an identity decline, a copy of your ID. For a bank decline, a bank letter showing the account is in your name. Send only what the appeal asks for, and never share your PIN.
Find out what your decline meant first. What each result means and why applications are declined explain the common reasons, and the SRD means test shows how income is counted.
The 90-day deadline
SASSA's appeals page says an appeal must be lodged within 30 days, and not later than 90 days. Treat 30 days as the safe deadline and 90 as the outer limit.
If you miss the deadline, the appeal regulations let the tribunal condone a late appeal "upon good cause shown" (regulation 15), so lodge it anyway and give your reason for the delay. What you can do without an appeal is wait for the next month, which SASSA assesses on its own. A decline for one month doesn't end your application.
How long an appeal takes
SASSA says the tribunal will inform you of the outcome electronically within 60 to 90 days of lodging your appeal, and will "endeavour" to finalise it in that time. Sites repeat the same 60 to 90 days, and none of them cites anything more than SASSA's own wording.
Nothing published shows how long appeals take in practice. If yours has passed 90 days with no outcome, call 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za and quote your appeal reference.
If your appeal is also declined
The tribunal's decision is the final decision, and SASSA says no further internal recourse is available. The Promotion of Administrative Justice Act lets you ask the High Court to review the decision, generally within 180 days. That is a legal process, separate from the SRD portal.
A rejected appeal doesn't stop SASSA assessing you again next month. If your circumstances have changed, a later month can still be approved. The SRD guide explains the full monthly cycle.
