SASSA Gold Card: Get, Renew or Replace

Your SASSA Gold Card stopped working at the ATM? It has been replaced by the Postbank Black Card. Postbank and SASSA set 31 August 2026 as the deadline to switch, and said the old cards would stop working after it. If you still have a Gold Card, collect a Black Card free of charge at a Postbank service point with your ID, and do it now. Your grant has not been taken away. You just can't draw it on the old card.

Gold Card versus the new Postbank card

Both are SASSA payment cards issued through Postbank. Postbank describes its SASSA Debit Card as tied to an account that receives social assistance, with a biometric chip that works on Visa or Mastercard channels. The Black Card is the current version and replaces the Gold Card. According to SAnews and Postbank:

  • the switch is free
  • you need only a valid South African ID or a temporary ID, and no forms
  • you can collect the card in any province, wherever your grant was approved
  • your balance moves from the Gold Card to the Black Card, and the new card works as soon as you collect it
  • it carries three free withdrawals, one free card replacement and a free monthly statement

The old Gold Cards stop working after 31 August 2026, according to the announcements. Postbank said the deadline would not be extended, as EWN reported in August. Anyone still on a Gold Card after the deadline would have their payments interrupted, EWN reported Postbank's statement. To find out where to collect a Black Card, call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.

How to get, renew or replace your card

To switch from a Gold Card.

  1. Take your ID, or a temporary ID, to a Postbank service point. SAnews lists them inside Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and SPAR stores.
  2. Ask for a Black Card. Nothing needs to be filled in.
  3. Collect the card and use it. Your balance is carried across.

To find the nearest site, SAnews says to dial *120*355# on any mobile phone. Postbank's toll-free number is 0800 53 54 55.

To get a card for the first time. Postbank says the first SASSA card is issued at no cost and that you should ask at your nearest SASSA office about the requirements.

To replace a lost, stolen or damaged card. Postbank lists one free replacement each year. Call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 straight away so the card can be blocked. The replacement sites also help with lost cards and PIN resets, SAnews reported, and you will need your ID. If your card was stolen, report it to the police as well.

If you forget your PIN. Postbank says to go to your nearest Post Office branch with your ID so that a new card and PIN can be issued. Never share your PIN. SASSA says it never asks for it.

If your card has expired. Postbank said in 2024 that expired Gold Cards stayed valid for that year's payments. That assurance was for 2024, and Gold Cards have since stopped working, so an expired or old card now means getting a Black Card.

Common card problems at the ATM

Postbank's own ATM guidance is short. Insert your card and follow the prompts, and a slip after each transaction shows your available balance. Keep your card in sight, and change your PIN often.

If your Black Card doesn't work at an ATM, call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 before you go to a branch.
