Reconfirmation versus a new application
The two get confused because both can appear as a step in the portal. They are different.
A new application starts the process from the beginning: you submit a fresh online application, and SASSA records the day you submitted it as your application date. It is for someone who has never applied, or whose application has been cancelled or has lapsed.
The monthly recheck happens without you. When the Department of Social Development proposed the 2022 changes to the SRD regulations, it said applicants would no longer have to confirm every three months that they still need the grant, because each month is assessed anyway. The 2022 proposal removed the old three-month confirmation, so a file does not lapse for that reason.
How the monthly recheck works
Each month SASSA tests what was paid into your bank account against the income limit and runs other database checks. If the month passes, you are approved for it. If it fails, that month is declined, and the next month is tested from scratch. The limit is R624, and SASSA said in January 2026 that its eligibility criteria had not changed. The means test page shows how deposits are counted.
Being approved one month doesn't promise the next, and a decline doesn't end your application. If you disagree with a decline, the appeal page explains how.
If you missed a month
It depends what "missed" means.
A month was declined. Nothing was missed by you. You can appeal that month, or wait: the next month is assessed separately, and a later month can be approved.
You were asked to verify and didn't. SASSA's booklet says new applicants must complete a facial biometric check before approval. Referred applicants must log in to the portal and request a link, and anyone approved but not paid must do the same. Without verification, a November 2025 SASSA statement says, the application is unsuccessful and no grant is paid. Do it as soon as you see the request.
Your phone number or bank account changed. A new cellphone number needs a facial recognition check, according to the booklet, and a payment will not verify to an account that does not belong to you.
The portal says your application has ended. SASSA has said that a grant it cancelled can be applied for again (statement of 20 January 2025). If that is what you see, don't wait: a new application dates from the day you submit it. Follow how to apply.
Before you reapply, check what your status is. What each result means covers Pending, Declined, Referred and the others, and the SRD guide explains the full monthly cycle. If you are approved but no money came, see the payment dates.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to reapply for SRD every month?
No. Each month is assessed separately without a new application. You only apply again if your application has ended or SASSA asks you to.
What happens if I miss a month's reconfirmation?
There is no monthly confirmation for you to miss. If SASSA asked you to verify your details or complete a facial check and you didn't, the application can be unsuccessful until you do. A declined month is not a missed one.
