SRD R370

How to Apply for SASSA SRD R370

You can apply for SRD from your phone, in your own time. There is no office application: you apply online at srd.sassa.gov.za with your 13-digit ID number and a cellphone number registered in your own name. Most of the trouble comes after you submit, when SASSA checks your details and may ask for a facial verification before it approves you. Get your number, your ID details and your bank account right now, and you skip most of it. The grant was R350 a month until 1 April 2024, which is why many people still search for it as the R350 grant.

Before you start: what you need

  • Your 13-digit South African ID number, or the identity details SASSA accepts for the permit you hold.
  • A cellphone number registered in your own name. In a November 2025 statement, SASSA told applicants to use numbers registered under their names for the official application.
  • A bank account in your own name. SASSA said that when banking details do not belong to the applicant, the system will not verify the payment.
  • A phone or computer with internet access.

Check that you qualify first, or the application can only end in a decline. The SRD guide lists the conditions: aged 18 to 59, no other grant, and income within the monthly limit. The means test page shows how that limit is counted.

How to apply, step by step

Here is the process as SASSA's statements describe it. SASSA's You and Your Grant booklet says SRD is accessed only through online application channels, and a SASSA statement of 6 November 2025 says to start at srd.sassa.gov.za, select either South African ID Holders or Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders, and follow the prompts.

  1. Open srd.sassa.gov.za in your browser and check that the address ends in sassa.gov.za. Never enter your details on any other address.
  2. Select South African ID Holders, or Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders if that is you, and follow the prompts.
  3. Give the cellphone number registered in your own name. SASSA sends its verification messages to that number.
  4. Enter your ID details and the other information the form asks for. They must match your Home Affairs record exactly.
  5. Accept the consent, which lets SASSA verify your identity, residency and income, and confirm the declaration.
  6. Give your bank details, in your own name.
  7. Submit, and keep any confirmation the portal gives you.
  8. Complete the facial verification, called eKYC, if SASSA asks you to. New applicants must, according to the booklet.

SASSA records your application date as the day a complete online application is successfully submitted. A half-finished form doesn't count.

Never share a PIN or any code you are sent with anyone. SASSA says it never asks for a PIN.

If the application fails or won't submit

Here is what SASSA's own documents explain.

The verification message does not arrive. SASSA sends them to the number you gave, so it must be registered in your name and working. If you are changing to a new number, the booklet says you must complete a facial recognition check to update it.

Your details are rejected. A mismatch with the Home Affairs record is the usual reason a verification fails. Check the spelling of your name and your ID number against your ID document. Identity verification failed explains the fix.

The bank details do not verify. SASSA said the payment will not verify if the account does not belong to you. Bank verification failed explains what to do.

The form times out or shows an error. Try again later, from the official address only. If the problem continues, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za, and say which step failed.

You have no internet. The High Court found in January 2025 that the online-only application excludes people without internet access, but the government appealed, and the appeal was before the Supreme Court of Appeal in August 2026. Ask someone you trust to help you, and don't give your ID number or PIN to a stranger.

What happens after you submit

Your application shows as Pending while SASSA checks your details. It then becomes Approved or Declined. What each result means covers all of them. If it is approved, payment follows in a pay run once your bank details are verified, according to SASSA. Check your result on the status checker.

If your application is referred, log in to the portal, request a link and complete the facial check. If it shows as approved but not paid, SASSA says the same step applies.
