What was announced
SASSA's chief executive set out a digital programme at a media engagement in the Eastern Cape on 17 September 2026, according to reports. The Witness reported on 19 September that it includes:
- WhatsApp channels for SRD enquiries and for general grant questions, plus one for beneficiaries to check the status of a review
- self-service kiosks at SASSA offices, with more advanced versions planned for key locations by the 2027/28 financial year
- free Wi-Fi at offices for people with limited data
- an online platform for new applications, payment detail changes and e-Life Certification
- a mobile app, which Grocott's Mail reported as coming later in 2026
SASSA said the digital services are meant to complement face-to-face help, not replace it, according to the same reports. The stated aim is to make services easier to reach for people who live far from an office.
The kiosks and Wi-Fi have their own guide.
What WhatsApp can do today
The honest answer is that SASSA has said what the channels are for, and not yet what each one can do. From the announcement:
- Enquiries. SRD and general grant questions.
- Review status. A separate channel to check where a grant review stands. SASSA has said beneficiaries whose grants are identified for review are paid on a fourth payment day and must complete the review at an office.
EWN's report of the announcement says the channel lets beneficiaries check their grant payment status, track an application and access other key grant information, and that it is an additional service, not a replacement for other channels.
Can I apply for a grant through WhatsApp?
Nothing in the announcement says so. The online platform is where new applications go, and SRD applications are made on the SRD portal. SASSA's booklet says SRD is accessed exclusively through online application channels. Treat any WhatsApp message that asks for your ID number or banking details in order to "apply" as a scam. SASSA says it never asks for your PIN, or for your ID number or banking details on social media or unofficial websites. Our guide to spotting a fake SASSA website lists the warning signs.
Which WhatsApp number is real?
The official WhatsApp chatbot number is 082 054 0016, from SASSA's own booklet. You may see other numbers published elsewhere. Use the booklet's number, and confirm it at sassa.gov.za or by calling 0800 60 10 11 if you want to. The contact page lists the official channels.
How to get started
- Check the number against SASSA before you message it.
- Save it under a name you will recognise.
- Keep messages to general questions. Don't send your ID number, PIN or a photo of your ID unless SASSA's own channel asks in a way you have confirmed. SASSA's announcement didn't say what information the channels ask for.
- If you can't get through, call 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. The how to apply guide explains what SRD needs.
