SASSA Bank Verification Failed: How to Fix It

You are approved, but SASSA won't pay, because it could not confirm your bank account. The most common cause is an account that is not in your own name, or whose name doesn't match your ID. Until the account verifies, nothing is paid. Give SASSA an active account in your name, then wait for the next pay run.

Why the account fails

SASSA is clear about the rule. In a November 2025 statement on SRD applications it said that when banking details do not belong to the applicant, the system will not verify the payment, and that once they are verified and confirmed the grant is received from the next pay run. Its You and Your Grant booklet says the account must be an active personal bank account in the applicant's own name, and must support electronic fund transfers.

That gives the main causes:

  • The account belongs to someone else A partner's, parent's or child's account won't verify, even with their permission.
  • The name differs The name on the account must match the name on your ID. A different spelling, initials in place of a first name, or a name changed after marriage can cause a mismatch.
  • The account is not active Closed, dormant or frozen accounts fail. SASSA requires an active account.

Sites add other causes, such as wrong branch codes, joint accounts and accounts still going through the bank's own identity checks. SASSA has not said so.

How to fix it

  1. Check the account name. Compare it with the name on your ID. Ask your bank for a confirmation letter that shows the account holder's name and number.
  2. Use an account in your own name. If you don't have one, open one. SASSA requires an account that accepts electronic transfers, so check that yours does.
  3. Update your banking details with SASSA. How to change your banking details explains the steps. For SRD, do this on the official portal.
  4. Complete any verification SASSA asks for. Its booklet says approved applicants who are not paid must request a verification link and complete a facial recognition check.
  5. Wait for the next pay run. SASSA's statement says payment follows once the details are verified. How long verification takes is not published. If it hasn't cleared after a full payment window, call 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za.

Never give your bank PIN or a card to anyone who offers to fix this. SASSA says it never asks for your PIN.

Do banks verify at different speeds?

Don't rely on tables that rate banks by pass rate and days. What is documented is the rule: an active account, in your name, that accepts electronic transfers.

Your status may read Approved while the bank is still unverified. Approved but no payment date explains the difference. What every status means covers the others.
